Mrs. Virpi Suutari Follows Mrs. Kristina Schulgin as Artistic Director
of DocPoint
Mrs. Kristina Schulgin, who has worked as DocPoint’s artistic director
since 2004, leaves her position after three years to continue her career
as a film director. DocPoint’s new artistic director is Mrs. Virpi
Suutari. The unique tradition of having an active documentary film
director as an artistic director continues at DocPoint.
”The past three years at DocPoint have been a rich period in my life.
Founder of DocPoint Arto Halonen left me an excellent film festival to
direct. DocPoint has now reached it’s sixth edition and an
interntionally acclaimed status among film festivals around the world.
Finnish documentary film culture is unique in a global scale”, Kristina
Schulgin says.
”I accept the post of DocPoint’s artistic director with joy and
curiosity. What would be more educative for a film maker than viewing
thousands of documentaries and programming the next edition of DocPoint
festival? I wish to continue the tradition of screening both new and old
Finnish and international films alongside classics of documentary
cinema. I would especially like to promote new Finnish documentary
titles, according to the intentions of the founders of the festival,”
Virpi Suutari states.
Virpi Suutari (40) is the director, screenwriter and editor of such
acclaimed documentary films as Sin (1996), White Sky (1998),
Soapdealer’s Sunday (1998) and The Idle Ones (2001), co-directed with
Susanna Helke. Retrospectives of the pair’s work have been screened in
Linz (2006), Rennes (2005), Arhus (2002) and Tampere (2003). Suutari has
been a member of European Film Academy since 2002 and headed the jury of
the international competition at Visions du Réel, Nyon in 2002.
Successful DocPoint Masterclass by Jørgen Leth and Asger Leth
DocPoint’s guest of honour, legendary Danish director Jørgen Leth and
his son Asger Leth, director of the acclaimed debut documentary Ghosts
of Cité Soleil, gave a relaxed joint Masterclass at DocPoint on Sunday
the 28th of January. Finnish film students and professionals had a
chance to discuss documentary film making and art with two generations
of documentary film makers. A lively dialogue was prompted by comparison
of extracts from both speakers’ films made in and about Haiti. Joint
projects The Five Obstructions and New Scenes from America were analyzed
in depth. The speakers themselves found the event inspiring.
