12.1.2007: Leth Masterclass, The Sami Premiere, Apollo Award & Errol Morris Retrospective at DocPoint

The 6th edition of DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival is approaching. Highlights of the festival programme include nine premieres of Finnish documentary films, retrospective of Errol Morris and Masterclass by the festiva's honorary guest Jorgen Leth, who will be joined by his son Asger Leht. The 6th edition of DocPoint Helsinki Documentary Film Festival takes place in 24-28th of January 2007. Accreditation for the festival has started on the festival's website www.docpoint.info (go to "Press and Guests").

Joint Masterclass by Jørgen Leth and Asger Leth at DocPoint

DocPoint's guest of honour, legendary Danish director Jørgen Leth and his son Asger Leth, director of the acclaimed debut documentary Ghosts of Cité Soleil, will collaborate and give a Masterclass together, something never experienced before in international film festivals. The event will be a unique and unprecedented public dialogue by two generations of documentary film makers.

Lehmuskallio & Lapsui's The Sami Opens DocPoint

The opening film of the festival is The Sami (Finland, 2006, 82 min) by Markku Lehmuskallio and Anastasia Lapsui. The film explores the identity of norhern natives, often torn between more than one nationalities. In addition, eight more Finnish documentary films have their premieres at DocPoint: The Skiers by John Webster, A Winter's Journey by Visa Koiso-Kanttila, Magic Night by Jouni Hiltunen, The Smoking Room by Jukka Kärkkäinen, Holy Father by Anne Laurila, The Catch by Taru Mäkelä and Eden Pastora - Commandant "Zero" by Alvaro Pardo. The Sami open's DocPoint on the 24th of January.

Ilkka Kippola to Receive Apollo Award

Finnish documentarists have been awarded at DocPoint ever since the founding of the festival. Apollo Award is a mark of recognition given in honour of a person or community who has done remarkable work in the field of Finnish documentary film. This year DocPoint has the honour to hand the Apollo Award to researcher and archivist Ilkka Kippola, nicknamed "the wizard of archives". Apollo Award is worth 5 000 euros and it is sponsored by YLE. The award will be handed at the opening ceremony.

During his career in Finnish Film Archive Ilkka Kippola has taken part in the production of hundreds of Finnish documentary films as an archive material specialist. He is a trusted co-worker of such internationally acclaimed Finnish film makers as Markku Lehmuskallio and Mika Taanila

Errol Morris Retrospective at DocPoint

DocPoint's programme includes a retrospective of American helmer Errol Morris, one of the most original film makers of our time. DocPoint screens all Morris' documentary features, from the debut Gates of Heaven to the award winning Fog of War. Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe by Les Blank documents the outcome of a legendary bet between an aspiring director and his tutor, while A Brief History of Errol Morris by Kevin Macdonald portrays the film maker and the philosophy behind his art. Altogether 9 films are screened in the programme.

New DOCview Selection Available Online

DOCview is DocPoint's venue for a professional audience consisting of a videotheque and a special selection of screenings. It provides an insight into the latest documentary production of Finland and its surrounding countries. The programmers hand pick and invite a selection of the most interesting documentaries from Sweden, Norway, Russia, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. DOCview makes Helsinki a vital last stop before continuing to Rotterdam or Gothenburg.

This year's DOCview selection is now ready and available online. The selection includes all films selected to DocPoint's New Finnish Documentaries programme 2002-2007, a special DOCview programme in DocPoint cinemas and a selection of films in DOCpoint videotheque.

Reconciliation (Russia, 2005), Yaptik-Hese (Russia, 2006), The Fisherman and the Dancing Girl (Russia, 2005), Collecting Shadows (Russia, 2006), Scythian Suite (Russia, 2006).
