Kasim Abid’s Life After the Fall, winner of several awards, is a story of the life of the director's family and the changes they go through in the years after the fall of the regime, having returned to Iraq after 30 years. The film, which documents the family’s life for four years, juxtaposes the everyday life and worries of an Iraqi family with the great historical events. The fall of Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship evoked hopes for a better future in many Iraqi families. As the daily violence and destruction grew more and more desperate, it dawned on many that the change in the system was not going in the desired direction. Also, the psychological and emotional effects of the war were such harsh experiences that it wasn’t self-evident that the families would be able to stay together. The film is the perfect opposite of the anonymity of the news imagery from Iraq that we see.
