Suomi Post Mortem

Saturday 24th, 17:00 @ Kiasma

The mother of a small child gets lost in thought as she passes Jokela train station. Yoko Ono sends a plea to the media that they do not mention the name of John Lennon's murderer. At the Health Centre, the appointment clerk informs the client that unfortunately there are not enough resources to treat suicidal people.

Above are extracts from the Finland post mortem project's outcome. All who were willing were invited to form their own visual commentary on Finland after the school killings. The idea of two documentary makers turned into a project that in a short period of time got artists, journalists and social professionals on the move.

Several small works have been collected in the project. Individual works do not need to provide an explanation for the tragedies, but together the works examine, map and take a stand on the time we live in. At best, they diversify and open up the discussion around the school killings. Maija Hirvonen | Translation by Sophy Bergenheim

Suomi Post-mortem presents.. 'Suomalaisten nuorten mediaympäristöä'

Clip Kino events are self-organised screening events of short video clips & documentaries found online. It aims to drag aspects of normalised 'private' activity - of viewing downloaded content on one's own computer - into public space for screening, appreciation and debate. 'Media-environmental awareness' applies to include the social ecology of one's interests, desires, and attentions in one's peer-group and community.

This is 'direct action' media literacy: What media is online? Who is watching it? What does it mean to them, and indeed to you? Where does the video clip come from? How was it produced and distributed? Has it inspired copies, remixes or derivatives?

Contributing to the 'Suomi Post-mortem' Project in DocPoint 2009 Festival, artist-organiser Andrew Paterson and documentary filmmaker Salla Sorri will host a workshop with members of the teenage Nuorten Ääni group, exploring different aspects of the Finnish youth's online video environment. DocPoint will host a seminar where a selection of the workshop's results will be exhibited and a discussion with the guests will be held on the topic.

Tue 20th Jan 4 pm-6 pm, Ateneum Hall, Ateneum Art Museum (Kaivokatu 2)
