DOKKINO 2009
DOKKINO – Documentary Film Event for Children and Youth
DOKKINO is a national documentary film event that introduces the world of creative documentary filmmaking to children and youth. DOKKINO is a part of DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival.
DOKKINO offers original and imaginative documentary films from all over the world with themes and topics closely related to children and youth and their lives. The films are presented in separate series for pupils in lower and upper levels of comprehensive school. Each film is selected so that the young’s developmental phases are taken into consideration. The event consists of art, media, and social education.
DOKKINO supports media education in schools by providing teachers with educational material related to the films. This material can be used in classes either before or after the film experience. With the educational material the pupils can discuss the themes of the films in depth and get to know documentary film as an art form. Through the material DOKKINO wants to stress the importance of developing skills in media literacy and critical thinking. The educational material is available in Finnish and in Swedish.
In 2009 the films will be seen in seven cities in Finland: Helsinki, Espoo, Oulu, Pori, Jyväskylä, Turku and Tampere. The documentaries will always be screened in a movie theatre during the school day. In addition to the film showings, DOKKINO will offer workshops related to the themes of the documentaries.
DOKKINO 2009: Our everyday lives
The DOKKINO films of 2009 encourage us to take a closer look at our surroundings and recognise the heroism in everyday life. The documentaries describe the world from the children and youth’s point of view, where concerns about climate change play an ever growing role. Also included is a workshop-film, where English teenagers show another side of their neighbourhood.
