Wars are a big part of the history of the United States. October Country explores the effects that the wars have had on Americans of various ages by delving into the story of one family. The Mosher family landscape in October is thick with cigarette smoke. The smoke cannot fully hide the looks filled with painful memories. In addition to the wars, the Moshers have been torn by poverty, teenage pregnancies and violence. Through these topics, the filmmakers reach a theme familiar also to Finns: the theme of keeping silent. When things become too painful to discuss, it is the easiest to remain silent.

Through one family, October Country is able to catch something universal about the lives of working-class Americans fighting with painful memories and financial problems. This intimate study of family relations is also a topical portrayal of the deep grief of those Americans who have lost relatives in war.
