At the opening day of the DocPoint Festival, the Helsinki city centre will be taken over by A Wall is a Screen – a film screening in which short films are reflected on the walls of the public buildings and interesting interiors.

The walking tour stops at the buildings and other interesting sites to see films in the middle of the pulsing city. You can take part in the whole performance, or just stop to see one or two films.

DocPoint 2012 will screen Aranda by Anu Kuivalainen. Over two decades marine research vessel Aranda has sailed back and forth on ocean – through tempests and glaciers.

The film is screened Sun 29th Jan at 6 pm.

The long term producer of YLE Dokumenttiprojekti, Iikka Vehkalahti, will be awarded with the DocPoint Apollo Award. The award is handed to a person who has contributed significantly to Finnish documentary film and earned credit on the field of documentary film.

The films for the DocPoint 2012 New Finnish Documentary Films and the Documentary Films From Finnish Film Schools series have been selected. From the 111 documentary films enrolled for the series the jury selected 12 films for the New Finnish Documentary Films series and 8 films for the Documentary Films From Finnish Film Schools series. Two Finnish films are also included in the Special Screenings series and one co-production in the Winners & Best Sellers series.

The DocPoint 2012 New Finnish Documentary Films

In January 2012, DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival brings fresh and topical documentary films from all over the world to the screens of Helsinki's cinemas.The selection of documentary films dealing with the present situation and the cultural issues of the Arab World sinks its teeth into the events of the Arab Spring and the changes in the Islamic culture.

In January the DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival brings fresh and topical documentary films from Arab countries and Europe to the screens of Helsinki's cinemas.

The series of documentary films dealing with the present situation and the cultural issues of the Arab World sinks its teeth into the events of the Arab Spring and the changes in the Islamic culture. Tahrir - Liberation Square (2011) follows the demonstrators for two weeks at the occupied Tahrir Square showing the reality of the uprising behind the newspaper headlines. Waiting for Abu Sayd (2010) introduces us a liberal researcher who rises against Islam but whose actions comes at a price.

DocPoint’s world tour expands next to Latin America. The Helsinki Documentary Film Festival’s world tour’s starting point was in New York last summer, and in this autumn and winter it’s heading towards Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico. The DocPoint world tour will present several successful Finnish documentaries from DocPoint’s previous years. The tour shows are planned to take place also in Brazil and Portugal.

DocPoint documentary tour’s goal is to make diverse Finnish quality films more appreciated around the world.  The tour is planned to continue until the autumn 2012.

The 10th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival closed on Sunday with its films and events drawing over 30,000 festival-goers, of which over 24,000 in the cinemas alone. The total of the screenings was 137 and films 148. DocPoint Tallinn, which was organized for the second time, attracted over 3 000 visitors.

 Against the previous information, Sophie Fiennes' film Over Your Cities The Grass Will Grow will be screened tommorrow (Sun 3pm, Kinopalatsi) without subtitles. In this film, however, the images play the main role an there is not much text (the texts are in German and French). Please notice that the duration of the film is 105 min.

10th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival takes place in January, from the 25th to 30th 2011.  To celebrate the 10th anniversary, DocPoint presents a series of 10 Finnish Documentary Classics besides new Finnish documentaries and international winners and bestsellers.

At the center of the 10. DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival programme in 25.–30.1.2011 stands a series of documentary films about Kongo. Kongo has been an independent state for 50 years, and the films examine the situation of the country today. The documentaries start the selection of representations of Africa, which culminates in the Ars 11 -exhibition in Kiasma in April.

DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival has no official selection procedure for non-national films. The international program is constituted of thematic selections that change each year. The festival doesn’t publicize the themes before the actual presentation of the final program. The selections are done by the artistic direction of the festival on "invitation only" basis and therefore the festival doesn't have an official deadline for submissions either.

Behind the Scenes takes the viewer behind the scenes of a film festival. The success of the festival relies on a professional organisation and staff. The set of photographs was shot during the 2009 DocPoint Documentary Film Festival at Maxim theater in Helsinki.

The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will take over the cinemas of Helsinki on the 26th–31st of January. This year DocPoint celebrates the pioneers of Finnish documentary film: producers Aho & Soldan. Year 2010 marks the 85th anniversary of the respectable company. In honouring the occasion, the festival will feature a wide Aho & Soldan retrospective, compiled in association with the National Audiovisual Archive. In the opening ceremony documentary film director Kiti Luostarinen will receive the Aho & Soldan Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is worth 5,000€, and is sponsored by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Tickets to Ateneum, Bio Rex, Kiasma and Orion screenings are available at DocPoint Online Box Office, before the festival at Bio Rex and during the festival also at all the above mentioned theatres.

The DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival programme includes many films that deliberately use provocation to expose something that would otherwise remain hidden. The festival programme also features films dealing with immigration and cultural borders, as well as the Winners & Bestsellers series comprising the most successful documentaries of the festival circuit. Acknowledged filmmakers, French Nicolas Philibert and Polish Marcel Lozinski, will be attending DocPoint Festival as honoured guests. The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival takes place on the 26th–31st of January 2010.

The festival programme will include a comprehensive retrospective of Lozinski’s work. Academy Award nominated Marcel Lozinski has been a productive filmmaker since 1972. In his documentaries Lozinski potrays people living under socialism and questioned the prevailing social conditions. He is a lecturer at Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing and has influenced a whole new generation of Polish filmmakers.
 

DocPoint - Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will be held for the first time in Tallinn on January 29th-31st 2010.

- The initiative to start DocPoint in Tallinn came from our Estonian colleagues. People are getting more interested in documentaries in Estonia, but they haven't had a festival focused only on documentary film. Estonian and Finnish cultures are so similar that starting the cooperation felt natural, says Artistic Director of DocPoint Festival Erkko Lyytinen.

DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival continued to grow at a remarkable rate. The festival aims to bring excellent documentaries onto the silver screens of Helsinki city centre. Taking place in the mid-winter, January 20th-25th, the festival brought in 23,000 cinemagoers. This shows over a 30% increase in audience numbers from last year. Including additional events, the festival, now in its eighth year, attracted 28,000 visitors.

DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival takes place on 20th – 25th January 2009 in Helsinki. DocPoint 2009 celebrates exceptional filmmakers and films on politically charged subjects. The main guests of the festival have their own series in the programme: a retrospective of Nick Broomfield films and a five-film tribute to Richard Leacock.

Italy for Beginners is a programme of new Italian documentary films. The films show the regional and cultural diversity of the country, and are also quite
political in their content. 

Documentary films conquer the cinemas of Helsinki more extensively than ever before next January, as DocPoint celebrates its 8th edition by becoming a six-day event. This enables both re-runs of the most popular films as well as the expansion of the festival programme.

The Next DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will be held on the 20th-25th of January 2009.
