DocPoint and the environmental organization Dodo present the celebrated Danish film series Cities on Speed as a part of the Minipolis action. The series consist of four films that present the current situation in four metropolises and explore the future from different points of view. The four directors depict the world's greatest cities through the lives of different people and various worldviews. Bogotá, Cairo, Mumbai and Shanghai are presented as unique; each living a life that is one of a kind.

The WDC Pavilion is situated between the Design Museum and the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Ullanlinnankatu 2-4) and is open all summer. The entrance to the event is free.

The 11th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival closed on Sunday with its films and events drawing 28 000 festival-goers, of which over 22 000 in the cinemas alone. The total of the screenings was 172 and films 134. DocPoint Tallinn, which was organized for the third time, attracted over 3 400 visitors.

What attracted the visitors of DocPoint Helsinki most this year were e.g. Finnish new documentary films, like Finnsurf by Aleksi Raij and Canned Dreams by Katja Gauriloff. Also the international bestsellers, like Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Marshall Curry's if a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front and Vikram Gandhi’s Kumaré brought the audience to cinemas.

DocPoint's silent film concert on Friday evening gathers together the world leading musicians. 

Rien que les heures silent film's original music was rearranged by film accompanist and pianist Maud Nelissen. She started her music career with chamber music, but in recent years, she's more and more devoted to composing (silent) film music.

 

Nelissen arrives to Helsinki with violist Lucio Degani and cellist Francesco Ferrarini - they both have passion for silent film music.

The DocPoint 2012 music selection starts today with two films that focus on two of the most successful bands in the world, The Beatles and U2. Martin Scorsese depicts the life of the “quiet Beatle”, George Harrison. The film includes previously unseen film and sound material as well as archive material and recent interviews. In David Guggenheim's latest film From the Sky Down the viewer is taken to the 80's, in to the middle of perhaps the worst crisis of U2.

At the opening day of the DocPoint Festival, the Helsinki city centre will be taken over by A Wall is a Screen – a film screening in which short films are reflected on the walls of the public buildings and interesting interiors.

The walking tour stops at the buildings and other interesting sites to see films in the middle of the pulsing city. You can take part in the whole performance, or just stop to see one or two films.

A large and varied group of documentary film makers around the world gathers in Helsinki when the 11th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival kicks off at 24th January.

The main guest of the festival is the Israeli director Eyal Sivan, who has been dealing critically with the political situations in the Middle East and Europe. Also the producer of the popular God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, Marc Weingarten, arrives in Helsinki. This documentary shows the rock icon to be everything but the pathetic zombie we got to know from The Osbournes tv-series.

The long term producer of YLE Dokumenttiprojekti, Iikka Vehkalahti, will be awarded with the DocPoint Apollo Award. The award is handed to a person who has contributed significantly to Finnish documentary film and earned credit on the field of documentary film.

Vehkalahti is awarded for fostering the Dokumenttiprojekti as well as for fighting for the funding and visibility of Finnish documentary film in YLE and at international forums. He has promoted Finnish documentary film around the world, supported young documentary film makers with all his heart and worked for the quality and content of Finnish documentary film with his whole personality. Vehkalahti has also emphasized the meaning of high quality documentary films in the programme of YLE.

An award-winning and widely discussed Israeli documentary film maker Eyal Sivan visits the 11th DocPoint  – Helsinki Documentary Film festival held in the end of January. Sivan (b. 1964) has directed almost twenty films during his career. He is a well-known critic of the Israeli government and has boldly commented on the political issues of the Middle East. A retrospection of his works is a part of the DocPoint festival programme.

Tahrir - Liberation Square (2011) follows the demonstrators for two weeks at the occupied Tahrir Square showing the reality of the uprising behind the newspaper headlines. Waiting for Abu Sayd (2010) introduces us a liberal researcher who rises against Islam but whose actions comes at a price.

Miesten vuoro - Steam of LifeDocPoint’s world tour expands next to Latin America. The Helsinki Documentary Film Festival’s world tour’s starting point was in New York last summer, and in this autumn and winter it’s heading towards Chile, Argentina, Uruguay and Mexico. The DocPoint world tour will present several successful Finnish documentaries from DocPoint’s previous years. The tour shows are planned to take place also in Brazil and Portugal.

DocPoint documentary tour’s goal is to make diverse Finnish quality films more appreciated around the world.  The tour is planned to continue until the autumn 2012.

The festival doesn’t publicize the themes before the actual presentation of the final program. The selections are done by the artistic direction of the festival on "invitation only" basis and therefore the festival doesn't have an official deadline for submissions either.

During DocPoint 26th–31st of Jan a number of topical Le Monde diplomatique’s main geographer cartographer Philippe Rekacewicz’s maps will be on display at the lobby of Ateneum Hall. The maps are part of the travelling exhibition No Tresspassing for Outsiders! Cartographic Studies on Borders and Migration. The coloured pencil drawings and their sketch-like appearance resembles the nature of borders – so instable and controversial.

The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will take over the cinemas of Helsinki on the 26th–31st of January. This year DocPoint celebrates the pioneers of Finnish documentary film: producers Aho & Soldan. Year 2010 marks the 85th anniversary of the respectable company. In honouring the occasion, the festival will feature a wide Aho & Soldan retrospective, compiled in association with the National Audiovisual Archive. In the opening ceremony documentary film director Kiti Luostarinen will receive the Aho & Soldan Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is worth 5,000€, and is sponsored by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

The festival will honour the awardee by screening a selected retrospective of her work. The Finnish documentary films for the 2010 DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival have been selected. The Jury selected 15 films for the New Finnish Documentary Films programme and 9 films for the Finnish Film Schools programme. Acknowledged filmmakers, French Nicolas Philibert and Polish Marcel Lozinski, will be attending DocPoint Festival as honoured guests. The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival takes place on the 26th–31st of January 2010.

The festival programme will include a comprehensive retrospective of Lozinski’s work. Academy Award nominated Marcel Lozinski has been a productive filmmaker since 1972. In his documentaries Lozinski potrays people living under socialism and questioned the prevailing social conditions. He is a lecturer at Andrzej Wajda Master School of Film Directing and has influenced a whole new generation of Polish filmmakers.

- The initiative to start DocPoint in Tallinn came from our Estonian colleagues. People are getting more interested in documentaries in Estonia, but they haven't had a festival focused only on documentary film. Estonian and Finnish cultures are so similar that starting the cooperation felt natural, says Artistic Director of DocPoint Festival Erkko Lyytinen.

DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival continued to grow at a remarkable rate. The festival aims to bring excellent documentaries onto the silver screens of Helsinki city centre. Two renowned British documentary film makers Nick Broomfield and Richard Leacock will be attending DocPoint 2009 Festival as honoured quests. The 8th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival is taking place on the 20th – 25th of January 2009.

Documentary films conquer the cinemas of Helsinki more extensively than ever before next January, as DocPoint celebrates its 8th edition by becoming a six-day event. This enables both re-runs of the most popular films as well as the expansion of the festival programme.

The Next DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will be held on the 20th-25th of January 2009.

Mr. Erkko Lyytinen (b. 1973) is the new Artistic Director of DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival. Mrs. Virpi Suutari leaves her post to continue her career as a filmmaker. Mr. Jari Matala continues as Executive Director of the festival.
