DocPoint draws an audience of nearly 30,000

The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival closed on Sunday, its films and events drawing over 27,000 festival-goers, of which 22,000 in the cinemas alone. The side event DocPoint Tallinn which was organized for the first time, was also a success with its 2100 visitors. What attracted the visitors of DocPoint Helsinki most were the premier screenings of Finnish documentary films.

Screening gathers the stars of the Story Tent on Friday

Hundreds have already shared their stories at the Story Tent around Finland. Now it’s time to see and hear what people had to share! At Kiasma, there will be a vast amount of people appearing in The Story Tent compilation, e.g. member of parliament and actor Risto Autio and  EU parliamentarian Liisa Jaakonsaari - and the unforgettable dog star.

Photo exhibition at Maxim: Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scenes takes the viewer behind the scenes of a film festival. The success of the festival relies on a professional organisation and staff. The set of photographs was shot during the 2009 DocPoint Documentary Film Festival at Maxim theater in Helsinki.

Philippe Rekacewicz’s maps on display at Ateneum Hall lobby

During DocPoint 26th–31st of Jan a number of topical Le Monde diplomatique’s main geographer cartographer Philippe Rekacewicz’s maps will be on display at the lobby of Ateneum Hall. The maps are part of the travelling exhibition No Tresspassing for Outsiders! Cartographic Studies on Borders and Migration. The coloured pencil drawings and their sketch-like appearance resembles the nature of borders – so instable and controversial.

DocPoint celebrates the pioneers of Finnish documentary film

The 9th DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will take over the cinemas of Helsinki on the 26th–31st of January. This year DocPoint celebrates the pioneers of Finnish documentary film: producers Aho & Soldan. Year 2010 marks the 85th anniversary of the respectable company. In honouring the occasion, the festival will feature a wide Aho & Soldan retrospective, compiled in association with the National Audiovisual Archive. In the opening ceremony documentary film director Kiti Luostarinen will receive the Aho & Soldan Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is worth 5,000€, and is sponsored by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

One of the directors of 24 hour Berlin, Thomas Heise to DocPoint

German director Thomas Heise will be attending DocPoint 2010 next week. Heise has directed several films which have been hits at festivals all over the world. His new film Material creates through a compilation of, well, materials a fascinating story of Germany, from the East Germany of over 20 years ago to the present day.

 

DocPoint's pre-sale has begun

Tickets to Ateneum, Bio Rex, Kiasma and Orion screenings are available at DocPoint Online Box Office, before the festival at Bio Rex and during the festival also at all the above mentioned theatres.

DocPoint’s Aho & Soldan Award goes to director Kiti Luostarinen

DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival is proud to present documentarist Kiti Luostarinen with the Aho & Soldan Lifetime Achievement Award for her long, successful career. The festival will honour the awardee by screening a selected retrospective of her work. DocPoint will be held on the 26th –31st January 2010, and the award will be handed to Luostarinen during the opening ceremony at the Bio Rex cinema on Tuesday, the 26th of January at 6:30 pm.

DocPoint – border breaking and provocation

The DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival programme includes many films that deliberately use provocation to expose something that would otherwise remain hidden. The festival programme also features films dealing with immigration and cultural borders, as well as the Winners & Bestsellers series comprising the most successful documentaries of the festival circuit. DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival will take place on the 26th –31st of January 2010.
